Lincoln Cent, 1959-1982, 1

Coin 1 of 17

Die Cap Strike, Full Brockage Obverse. When the initial struck coin adhered to the obverse die, all of the metal was right there and the next strike on a planchet left a perfect brockage on the next coin. However, it started the metal flowing out and around the end of the obverse die, eventually forming the bottlecap shape of the "cap." This made the metal over the face of the obverse die thinner and thinner but slightly convex, thicker in the middle. If the press keeps cycling and no planchet feeds in, the thin but convex cap will strike against the uncovered reverse die, being struck up some in the middle because the cap is thicker there but very little or not at all near the borders because of the curvature of the face of the cap. This new "second generation strike" impression will continue to spread outwards as the cap resumes striking more blank planchets. This was shortly after the second raised reverse was formed. Really nice piece with superior Memorial Detail than is typically seen!
