Pax standing l. holding branch and scepter. The effusive titles voted to Julia after
Septimius’ death in 211 AD, “Mother of the Two Emperors, Mother of the Senate,
Mother of the Fatherland”, are joined with a figure of Pax to express the hope that
she could reconcile her quarreling sons! The usual designation of this figure as Julia
herself is an error, since she wears the normal coiffure of a goddess not Julia’s own
characteristic helmet-like hairdo. Cohen’s alternate description of the figure on this
denarius as Pax, following Joseph Arneth, rather than Julia, seems quite correct!
