Dr. Arthur F. Bissell
The following lots 114-119 were
gifted to the museum by Dr. Arthur
F. Bissell, who was the son of
Edward Bissell. In 1833, Edward
Bissell moved to Toledo and was one
of the founders of that city and very
largely instrumental in its develop-
ment. A condensed history of Toledo,
published in 1869, says: “Whatever
Toledo may become in the future, she
will always owe her first start in life to
Edward Bissell, a gentleman of high
education and refinement, of great
foresight and sagacity.”
Arthur Bissell was born in Geneseo, New York in 1827 but moved at an
early age to Toledo. In 1844 he moved back to New York to attend the
College of Physicians and Surgeons where he finished early and had to
wait a year before getting his license because he was not of legal age. Early
in his career he was placed in charge of the Children’s Hospital on Black-
well’s Island and set up a private practice in New York so he could hone
his skills. In the fall of 1848 he returned to Toledo and in 1849 was elected
physician to the Hospital of Toledo and in 1850 was elected city physician.
His biggest contribution was being the founder of the School of
Homeopathy of Toledo. He died in 1915.
