Attic Stemless Cup

ca. 470-450 BC

. Wheel-thrown, slip-decorated earthenware.

H: 2 1/2 in. (5.7 cm); Diam (lip): 7 1/16 in. (18 cm); Diam (with handles): 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm).

Provenance: Was a gift of the Greek government to Professor Carl W. Blegen, the famous Bronze Age archa-

ologist of the Classics Department of the Univeristy of Cincinnati. Blegen is best remembered for his accom-

plishments in the re-excavation of Troy in the 1960’s. During a visit to Toledo Blegen gave the cup to Ward and

Miriam Canaday. Mr. and Mrs. Ward M. Canaday, Toledo, 1975.; Gift of Doreen C. Spitzer (daughter of the

H: 5 15/32 in. (13.9 cm); Rim Diam: 1 7/32 in. (3.1 cm); Diam (shoulder): 1 27/32 in. (4.7 cm); Base Diam: 1 3/8

in. (3.5 cm).

Provenance: Came to Toledo Museum of Art in 1948 (labeled as “App 7-30-48), no records were kept and it was

formally accessioned in 1984. So the Lekythos has been at the Toledo Museum since 1948. Toledo Museum of

Art, Accession no. 1948.71

Provenance: Reported by dealer (Antike Kunst) to have been found in a tomb in the vicinity of Naples. (Antike

Kunst Palladion Gallery (Gianfranco and Ursula Becchina), Basel, 1979). Kleia R. and Kurt T. Luckner, 1979-1985.

Gifted to Toledo Museum of Art in 1985, Accession no. 1985.93
