ties or coins not sold before the closing date will be sent to the highest bidder on April 27th, 2016. All items carry a lifetime guarantee for authenticity.

(resembling a fish); below, wheel; pellet in lozenge to left. Ex Gemini XII, 11 January

2.

CALABRIA, TARENTUM

; 320 BC, Gold Stater, 8.54g. Fischer-Bossert-G5 (V4’/R5),

specimen j (this coin). Obv: Head of Persephone right wearing slight veil, stephanos

ornamented with palmette, and triple-pendant earring. Rx: Poseidon seated left on

diphros, holding trident and looking down at child Taras standing before him, with arms

and head raised to Poseidon. Fischer-Bossert records only twelve staters of this type, from

two dies; one die with two coins and our die with ten coins, five of which are in museums

(Berlin, Florence, London, two in Paris).

Ex Larry Adams Collection, Triton XIX, Part 3, 4 January 2016, lot 2004

Ex Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., April 2002

Ex Athos D. Moretti Collection, NAC 13, 8 October 1998, lot 89

Ex Vlasto Collection (1947), no. 1 (this coin)

Ex Jameson Collection (1913), no. 137 (this coin)

Ex G. Nervegna Collection, Sambon-Canessa, 18 November 1907, lot 241. This very

rare gold stater, only twelve recorded from two dies, is one of the most sought Greek

gold coins. According to Wolfgang Fisher-Bossert, author of the standard work on early

Tarentum, it is also the most frequently forged Greek gold coin. Recently an example that

was sold in Europe for several hundred thousand francs turned out to be a forgery. Our

example with a pedigree dating back over 100 years and from four major collections is for

sure genuine.

The fact that Nervegna, Jameson, Vlasto, Moretti, and Adams all obtained this very coin

for their important collections means that no better example was available and they had to

have one of these because of its historic and artistic significance. This coin is doublestruck

on the reverse, but so is Gulbenkian’s, a collector who sought only the best coins and was

very wealthy. Amethod of side lighting made his coin look flawless in his photograph but

it is catalogued as doublestruck by Kenneth Jenkins who wrote the catalogue. Our coin

also looks flawless in Jameson and Vlasto on plates reproduced by the same conventional

method at the time. This coin represents a significant opportunity for any educated or

relevant collector or museum. Some flatness behind ear and scrape on neck, on reverse

some small contact marks in field and figures somewhat doublestruck. aEF............39500
