of Arethusa left, wearing bead necklace and triple-drop earring, crowned with reeds,
hair elaborately curled and rolled, four dolphins around. Apparently from an early state
of this reverse die, before the addition of a griffin’s head in the field below Arethusa’s
chin, which is seen for example in Gallatin’s illustration of the die. Purchased on 20
March 1977 from the dealer Claude Amsellem (original invoice accompanies this
coin), who mistakenly described it as a decadrachm of Kimon. Significant scrape on
neck of Arethusa that does not disturb the major parts of this beautiful die. Toned VF.
