Subdivision of Block 31 Kinzies Addition to Chicago

By:

Samuel S. Greeley

Date:

April 20, 1883

Dimensions:

14 x 20.5 inches (35.5 x 52 cm)

Signatures:

Samuel S Greeley (City Surveyor), Eugene Fishburn (Notary Public),

H. J. Jones

(Examiner of Subdivisions)

This map shows block 31 of Kinzie’s Addition subdivided into seventy-three separate lots. The

map includes what was then lakefront property, but as history tells us, the shore would be

extended further eastward. Pencil markings on the map indicate what would ultimately become

an extension of block 2 in the new subdivision. The script notes that Edwin H. Sheldon, the

longtime attorney for William B. Ogden in many of his Chicago land acquisitions, would

become the sole executer and trustee of the mapped area under his last will and testament.

Condition:

Map drawn on fine glazed cloth that had been intentionally folded. Various stains on

the verso are visible on the recto along with a manuscript recording of the map.
