This group of four maps provides a nice representation of the legacy left by William B.
Ogden and Edwin H. Sheldon within the Chicago real estate market. Since their arrivals to the
city, Ogden in 1833 and Sheldon in 1846, the two played integral roles in the planning and
growth of the city of Chicago through the decades leading up to the Chicago Fire and years
thereafter. Even after Odgen’s death in 1877 and Sheldon’s in 1890, their names appear on city
survey maps well into the early 20
th
century. Though these maps differ from the rest in this
collection as they focus more on the construction of new buildings as opposed to the subdivision
of land parcels and creation of alleyways and streets, they provide a nice conclusion to this
collection as they were prepared for Ogden, Sheldon & Company after their passing, on lots
they created, in a city they helped grow.
